Thoroughbred Racing Takes a Tragic Fall

I lost interest in thoroughbred racing for nearly a year after Ruffian’s 1975 breakdown. It will probably be that long again after the Breeders’ Cup deaths of Mr. Nickerson, Shaker Knit and the magnificent filly Go For Wand.
We may joke about the comparative lack of brainpower of horses, and other animals, but in death we should realize how much more they do for us than we for them.
