World IN BRIEF : POLAND : Dark Horse Gains as Election Nears

Prime Minister Tadeusz Mazowiecki said Poland would head for chaos if his major rival, Lech Walesa, wins the presidential election just over a week away. While Walesa urged thousands of supporters in Warsaw to elect him to get the country moving, Mazowiecki accused his former Solidarity comrade of seeking power without responsibility. “That could only lead to another breakdown,” Mazowiecki said. Walesa and Mazowiecki are the front-runners for the Nov. 25 election. But a new poll showed support growing fast for millionaire businessman Stanislaw Tyminski, an independent whom few Poles had heard of only a month ago. The sample showed Walesa’s support slipping from 41% to 35% and Mazowiecki’s from 23% to 19% in the past week, while Tyminski’s surged from 8% to 17%.
