FCC Sees Radio Frequency Crunch: The head of the Federal Communications Commission announced an endeavor to squeeze future technologies such as high-definition TV, personal phones and digital radio onto the nation’s crowded airwaves. FCC Chairman Alfred C. Sikes, noting that Congress and his agency are making decisions today that will affect American lifestyles and economic competitiveness well into the 21st century, said the FCC will initiate a search next year for frequencies to satisfy the voracious appetites of new radio-based technologies. “My ultimate goal will be to create a new spectrum reserve for emerging technologies,” Sikes said in what was good news for a host of would-be broadcasters and telecommunications companies that are waging a fierce battle for wave space.
