Rebutting Milli Vanilli

In October, 1988, I was contracted to perform on a television variety show in East Berlin. This was before the demise of the wall.
The hourlong program, “Ein Kessel Buntes,” was a live broadcast composed mainly of singers promoting their latest releases, including the Milli Vanilli duo, and a sprinkling of variety acts.
During rehearsal, members of the 16-piece orchestra were noticeably enthusiastic when I handed them musical scores for my closing song. The remark made by the musical director never impressed me until the recent turn of events: “Hey, the ventriloquist is the only one who’s not lip-syncing.”
