Oil Rig Count Rises: The number of working oil and gas rigs in the United States jumped 22 to 1,108, Baker Hughes Inc. reported. The count one year ago was 1,029 rigs, the company said. Baker Hughes has kept the rig count, a widely watched index of drilling activity, since 1940. The count represents the number of rigs actively exploring for petroleum, not those producing oil.
