IRVINE : Widened Route at Base to Open Friday

A widened and straightened Irvine Boulevard through El Toro Marine Corps Air Station, designed to relieve a major bottleneck for commuters, will be opened to traffic Friday.
County and Marine officials will attend a ribbon-cutting ceremony at 10:30 a.m. Friday near the intersection of Irvine Boulevard and Lambert Road.
Orange County Supervisor Gaddi H. Vasquez and Brig. Gen. Tom Adams will drive the first vehicles along the realigned, 3.5-mile segment.
The $3.6-million project was a cooperative effort with the Marines; 64 pre-World War II housing units were demolished at the El Toro base and 64 new housing units were built for military families at the Tustin Marine helicopter facility nearby.
The road project was designed to provide an alternate to the heavily congested Santa Ana Freeway.
