CONEJO VALLEY : Board Approves 20% Raise for Teachers

Conejo Valley school board members have approved a three-year contract that would give the district’s 712 teachers a raise of more than 20% by July, 1992. They also granted a 7% raise for district administrators, retroactive to the beginning of the school year.

Members of the United Assn. of Conejo Teachers are scheduled to vote on the new contract at 3 p.m. Jan. 23 at Thousand Oaks High School. If approved by a majority of union members in attendance, a 7% salary raise would be implemented retroactive to July, 1990, followed by a 7% increase this July and a 6% increase in July, 1992.

The contract increases the entry-level salary for teachers in the Conejo Valley Unified School District from $24,332 to $26,035 annually, with the highest salary increasing from $43,898 to $46,970 annually, union officials said. Teachers will also receive a small lottery bonus soon but will not get a portion of the district’s California Lottery funds after that.

The contract also reduces class size from a maximum of 37 students to 36 for fourth through sixth grades. Secondary physical education classes may also be reduced in size.

District managers, supervisors, counselors and psychologists will also receive a 7% raise for the 1990-91 school year, in addition to a small lottery bonus. School board members said future salary increases for administrators will be considered later.

Employees not represented by a union, including substitute teachers, home teachers, test proctors, campus supervisors, Saturday work-study supervisors and student helpers, will receive a 7% raise effective immediately.

A 7% salary increase for adult-school teachers and counselors will be retroactive to the beginning of the school year.
