WESTMINSTER — A 19-year-old man who allegedly ran a red light was thrown from his van and critically injured Saturday after colliding with a Cadillac driven by an 85-year-old man, police said.
Witnesses told police that Robert Nellis ran a red light at Bolsa Avenue and East Drive near Westminster Mall at 10:24 a.m. and collided with an Eldorado driven by Clifford Waldron.
Waldron, a Midway City resident, suffered only cuts and bruises on his hands, Police Lt. Mike Schliskey said, but Nellis was not wearing a seat belt and was ejected.
Nellis was transported by helicopter to Long Beach Memorial Medical Center, where he underwent surgery for a fractured leg and was later transferred to the intensive care unit, hospital spokesman Ron Yukelson said.
The accident is under investigation, Schliskey said.
