China had its biggest trade surplus ever in 1990, with exports soaring to a record high, newspapers and economists said.
Exports jumped 18.1% to $62.07 billion, newspapers said. Imports, hit by an austerity drive, dropped 9.8% to $53.96 billion.
The resulting surplus of $8.11 billion compared to a deficit of $6.6 billion in 1989.
The last time China had a surplus was in 1983, when it was $800 million.
Total trade in 1990 grew 3.4% over 1989 to $115 billion, newspapers said.
