HANOVER, N.H. — The 20-year-old son of Maine Gov. John McKernan has died more than a week after he suffered heart failure during baseball practice at Dartmouth College.
Peter McKernan, a sophomore, died Wednesday evening, with his parents by his bedside, a spokeswoman at Dartmouth-Hitchcock Medical Center said.
The younger McKernan collapsed Jan. 14, near the end of a two-mile jog during baseball practice. A teammate administered cardiopulmonary resuscitation for five to seven minutes until an ambulance arrived.
McKernan never regained consciousness. He remained on a ventilator till the end. Tests indicated no drugs were involved.
