N.Y. Daily News Talks Break Off: The newspaper and its striking pressmen’s union broke off contract negotiations a day after Publisher James Hoge set a Monday deadline for unions to grant concessions. The announcement of the cutoff, which was made by both sides, cleared the way for a search for a new owner of the 71-year-old tabloid. W. J. Usery, who was brought in to make a last-ditch effort at mediation, withdrew from the negotiations. Meanwhile, publisher Robert Maxwell’s representatives flew to New York to begin talks about buying the paper.
