Chief Refuses to Rehire Ex-Undercover Officer

Los Angeles Police Chief Daryl F. Gates upheld a Police Department Board of Rights recommendation and refused to rehire a former policewoman who allegedly became romantically involved with a high school football player during an undercover operation, police said Thursday.
The Board of Rights recommended last week that Sharon Fischer be dismissed from the force for writing sexually suggestive letters to a 17-year-old Granada Hills student, telephoning him at home and maintaining an improper relationship with a minor.
The alleged relationship occurred while she was serving as an undercover narcotics officer at Kennedy High School in Granada Hills in 1986. She has denied any romantic involvement with the student and has maintained that she was only trying to maintain her identity as an undercover narcotics officer after some students suspected that she was a police officer.
Fischer, 26, could not be reached for comment.
