Fire Destroys 9 Stores in Mini-Mall

An early morning fire destroyed nine small businesses in an Inglewood mini-mall Thursday, causing an estimated $400,000 in damage and forcing the evacuation of a neighboring apartment building, authorities said.
The 2:15 a.m. fire in the 4200 block of Century Boulevard was brought under control in about 15 minutes by 50 firefighters from Inglewood and five surrounding departments.
Battalion Chief Ken Mays said the fire moved swiftly because the businesses shared a common attic. Firefighters saved three businesses and four vacant business spaces in the mini-mall and kept the fire from spreading to a nearby 20-unit apartment building, he said.
The cause had not been determined, but investigators were looking into possible electrical problems. No injuries were reported.
