GERMAN Chancellor Helmut Kohl welcomed the cease-fire and pledged that Germany will work for stable peace in the Middle East. Declaring “an historic and comprehensive victory” over Iraq, BRITISH Prime Minister John Major demanded that Iraq destroy its weapons of mass destruction. He also said Britain’s ambassador has returned to the embassy in Kuwait city. The war’s outcome represents a “great day” and a major victory for the United Nations and the coalition against Iraq, NATO Secretary General Manfred Woerner said in Brussels. “I pay particular tribute to President Bush, whose leadership played a crucial role in forming and maintaining the coalition,” he added.
