Rainstorm Forces Rescheduling of Baseball Games

Opening-round games in the 32-team Loara and the 16-team Newport Elks baseball tournaments scheduled for today have been postponed because of rain.
Ray Moore, Loara tournament director, said first-round games would be rescheduled Saturday or Monday.
“Everyone always jokes that we bring the rain, but we’ve had 88 games over the past five years and only 17 of them have been postponed because of rain,” Moore said.
Vince Brown, director of the Newport Elks Tournament, said he hoped to reschedule all of the first-round games for Saturday.
“I’ve talked to all the host schools, and there’s no way we can play Friday,” Brown said. “We’ll be lucky if we play Saturday. Most of the fields are flooded.”
The Southern Section soccer playoffs also could be affected by the weather, according to section officials. The 4-A boys’ and girls’ championships are scheduled tonight at Gahr High School in Cerritos.
Officials from the competing schools and the section will meet today to determine if the field is playable.
