Customers can still get an old-fashioned cut and a shave at Gibson Barber Shop in Normal Heights. They can also gaze at an amazing collection of hats and pennants as John. L. Gibson, 62, applies the straight-edged razor to their now stubbly, now baby-smooth necks--and all for five bucks. Gibson’s shop is the oldest barber shop in the city to be continuously doing business in the same location, said a spokeswoman for the Board of Barbers Examiners, a state licensing agency. Gibson opened his shop at 3532 Adams Ave. along with a partner in 1950. In 1955, he took over the business. The sports memorabilia began multiplying after he hung a few caps on the ceiling for decoration. Soon, customers were bringing in their contributions.
