GTE Will Lay Off 500: GTE Corp. says it is laying off about 500 engineering, administrative and technical employees, most of them in Needham, Mass. The layoffs, effective April 12, affect about 8% of GTE Government Systems’ sector in Needham, Taunton and Westborough, Mass. The sector makes military communications equipment. GTE said it expects future reductions in Defense Department spending.
