Sales of U.S. Savings Bonds Hit 50-Year High: Americans bought $815 million worth of U.S. savings bonds in March, setting a 50-year record for the month, the Treasury Department said. Sales for the six months of the fiscal year--$4.16 billion--were 17% higher than a year ago. At the end of March, Americans held $129.70 billion in bonds, an 8% increase over the $119.88 billion held a year before.
