Record Amount of Grocery Coupons: Spurred by a weakening economy, manufacturers issued a record 306.8 billion grocery store coupons in 1990--more than 1,200 coupons for every man, woman and child in the United States, said a coupon tracking organization. “In times of recession, manufacturers revert to the basics: trade deals for the grocers and cents off to the consumer,” said Kermit Myers, vice president of the New York-based Advertising Checking Bureau. The 306.8 billion coupons represented an increase of 16.7% over 1989. Only about 4% of all coupons are ever used.
