OBITUARY : Benjamin Ruiz, Former Mayor of South El Monte

Benjamin Ruiz, former mayor of South El Monte, has died of leukemia at age 71.
Ruiz served on the South El Monte City Council from 1970 to 1978 and served as mayor in 1973-74 and 1977-78. He also served on the Planning Commission and as chairman of the Citizens League for Community Improvement.
He was a founding director of the Mid-Valley Mental Health Council and the Mid-Valley Manpower Consortium and a member of the Los Angeles County Tax Appeal Board. At the time of his death he was a resident of La Verne.
Ruiz is survived by his wife, Connie, three sons and two grandchildren. Funeral services will be held today at 10 a.m. at Rose Hills Memorial Park in Whittier.
