A 2,500-seat amphitheater at College Park near Oxnard College may be completed by the summer of 1992, a county official said Wednesday.
The Ventura County Board of Supervisors awarded a $97,610 grading contract Tuesday to B.L. Rhoades Construction of San Bernardino to build the outdoor theater between the Pacific Coast Highway and the college, said Ron Blakemore of the county Recreation Services Department.
The company will build a large earth mound and shape it into a bowl, Blakemore said.
Some of the soil for the amphitheater will be dug from the site of a proposed lake nearby. Once the soil is mounded into place, it will be allowed to settle for six months before construction of tiered seating, Blakemore said.
The county will also spend $554,497 in grant money and matching funds to build a stage, dressing room and seats. The top section of the amphitheater will be planted with a lawn for festival seating, Blakemore said.
