CLIPBOARD : THE WOMEN OF WESTERN

Western State University College of Law, the county’s only law school, now has a student body that is almost half women. The 44% female count is a near doubling of women since 1978, when the comparable figure was 25%.

The 44% figure has Western State pretty much in line with many of the state’s other law schools, such as Hastings/UC San Francisco (49% women); UCLA: (42.5%); Stanford (40.5%), and USC (40%). Two of the nation’s top schools outside California, Harvard and Chicago, have female representation of 41% and 35%, respectively.

Here’s how Western State’s distaff ranks have grown:

1978 -- 25%

1980 -- 34%

1982 -- 37%

1984 -- 41%

1986 -- 41%

1988 -- 43%

1990 -- 44%
