BAD MEMORIES: The devastation of the Kurds is all too familiar to Saman Shali of Santa Ana. He helped distribute Red Cross-supplied food and blankets to Kurdish refugee camps inside Iraq 17 years ago, during an earlier failed rebellion against the government. . . . “I saw families of four with only one blanket, all shivering” and huddling together for warmth, he remembers. This time Shali, one of 200 Kurdish immigrants in the county (E1), has helped raise more than $12,000 for food and medical supplies for the Kurds.
