HIGH SCHOOL ROUNDUP : Mt. Carmel Offense Outlasts Poway

Top-ranked Poway scored nine runs on 10 hits but came up on the short end of a Palomar League game against visiting Mt. Carmel Thursday. The Sundevils scored seven runs in the fifth inning and piled up 17 hits off four Titan pitchers en route to a 15-9 victory.

Poway Coach Rudy Casciato shrugged off the loss. However, it knocked the Titans (11-3, 3-1) out of first place in the Palomar because Vista (4-0) beat Fallbrook, 10-3. Unranked Mt. Carmel, meanwhile, moved into a second-place tie with Poway at 9-7-2, 3-1.

“It was just one of those days,” Casciato said. “We had 10 hits and scored nine runs. That’s good enough to win almost any day. We were in a similar situation in the Upper Deck Tournament a few weeks ago, when Capistrano Valley scored 11 runs in one inning against us. Those things happen.”

The Titans entered the fifth inning leading, 6-4. But then the Sundevils got consecutive hits by Andy Owen (two for four), Chris Chavez (three for five), Matt Miller, Larry Lehman (two for five, three RBIs) and Ryan Hernandez (two for four). Then Armondo Sanchez capped the inning with a three-run homer.

Sanchez was four for five with five RBIs in support of winner Mario Israel, who pitched a complete game. Scott Tittrington (3-1) picked up his first loss for Poway. Matt Sanders was three for four for Poway. Brock Marsh, Rob Plarski and Eddie Thompson each had two hits.

“The league’s going to be a dog fight,” Casciato said. “It’ll be just like it was in basketball. That was a fight all the way down to the end.”
