WORLD IN BRIEF : ITALY : Oil Disaster Feared After Tanker Sinks

A tanker loaded with nearly 41 million gallons of oil burned for a second day off the Italian Riviera, prompting environmental officials to say the Mediterranean is in danger of ecological disaster. Tugs towed the sinking ship to shallower waters, and seven miles of floating barriers were laid out in an attempt to prevent crude oil from fouling the resorts around Genoa. The Cypriot-registered Haven partially sank about three miles offshore after an explosion of undetermined origin Thursday. Two crewmen died and three were missing and presumed dead. The oil is about four times the amount spilled in the Exxon Valdez disaster.
