About 14 ultracyclists will compete in a 508-mile race through the Mojave Desert this weekend. The Race Across America Open West bicycle event will begin at 7 a.m. today at the Ranch House Inn in Valencia and end at 7 a.m. Monday in Twentynine Palms. Cyclists, among them seven who will try to qualify for the Race Across America in July, will pass such remote California outposts as Trona, Towne Pass, Bad Water in Death Valley and Kelso.
