A collision of a tanker truck carrying diesel fuel, a car and a camper on southbound Interstate 5 near Del Mar Heights Road on Saturday sent five people to San Diego hospitals.
The names of the victims and their conditions were not available late Saturday.
A San Diego Fire Department spokesman said that the semi overturned, spilling about 40 gallons of fuel, and the car burst into flames on impact.
Passing motorists, including a Navy lieutenant colonel from Irvine and a Westminster woman, rescued the occupants of the burning automobile, including a 5-year-old girl and an elderly woman. The southbound lanes of the freeway were closed briefly to clean up the spilled fuel and debris.
