It’s All History, So Give Columbus Credit

The April 1 article “Sea of Troubles” noted the efforts being made to discredit Christopher Columbus and his accomplishments. This movement is yet another example of attempts to reevaluate historical events by contemporary standards.
Let us be proud of the fact that our standards have changed, that conduct which was perfectly acceptable and even praiseworthy a few generations ago is no longer acceptable. If we believe in progress, we must recognize this. However, this does not mean that we are entitled to judge historical figures by modern standards.
