EDUCATION : School Districts : Blinking Light Installed at Hazardous School Crossing
- Share via
City workers have installed a blinking caution signal at a crosswalk near Washington Middle School in Long Beach where cars have struck and injured four children this year. City officials hope the recently installed light will slow motorists until July, when a three-way traffic signal should be in place at the intersection of Pacific Avenue and 15th Street.
Washington Middle School administrators first asked for more traffic control at the crosswalk years ago. City attention focused on the problem after traffic accidents injured a total of three children in January and February. A hit-and-run driver struck a fourth child in April, even after the city hired a crosswalk guard.
The caution light and the presence of police officers writing tickets have improved the situation, Vice Principal Phil Ramseyer said.
