BOWLING : Neuer Leads After 6 Games at Riverside

RIVERSIDE — Town Square Lanes has never been a favorite stop for left-handed pro bowlers. No left-hander has won there in seven PBA events.

But Andy Neuer may change all that. The Pennsylvanian rolled games of 229, 234, 259, 202, 245 and 234 Wednesday for the six-game lead in the $145,000 Kessler tournament.

“There may be hope for us,” said Neuer, 25. “I never bowled well here before. But today I had a shot (for a strike) and scored well.”

Neuer, at 1,402, was one pin ahead of Mike Miller. Ricky Corona of Orange was fifth, 24 pins back.

Bowling Notes

Marshall Holman, the all-time PBA money leader with $1.5 million in earnings, has been bowling well in recent tournaments. But Wednesday, after a so-so-round, he said his 148 game on national TV in the Fresno title playoffs “was embarrassing.” . . . David Ozio, leading candidate for 1991 bowler-of-the-year honors with three titles, said speed on the ball is a major factor in scoring under today’s lane conditions. He said he throws a ball at 17 m.p.h., “about average for the pros.”
