HIGH SCHOOL ROUNDUP : Bishop’s, Holtville Qualify for Playoffs

The Bishop’s School held off Calvin Christian, 9-5, and Holtville routed La Jolla Country Day, 18-2, Monday to qualify for the San Diego Section 1-A baseball playoffs.
Bishop’s (8-12) earned the right to play second-seeded Imperial (11-4-1) in Wednesday’s first round at Imperial, and Holtville will play at top-seeded Francis Parker (12-8).
Losing pitcher Greg Veazey (6-5) had a two-run home run for Calvin Christian, which finished 10-10.
Holtville had three homers, including two by John Flores.
BOYS’ TENNIS
Point Loma 13, Bonita Vista 5--Marko Silva swept his three singles sets to lift Point Loma (14-5) to a first-round victory in the section 3-A team tournament. Silva defeated Bobby Morse, 6-3, Matt Bermatz, 6-0, and Sean Walters, 6-0. Brock Matison and Clancy Casey of Point Loma teamed to sweep their three doubles sets.
San Dieguito 10, Monte Vista 8--San Dieguito (13-8) won a mild upset at Monte Vista (13-4).
Valhalla 8, St. Augustine 8 (84-73)--In the closest 2-A match of the day, Valhalla (14-3) needed a game-count to defeat St. Augustine (8-11).
La Jolla Country Day 10, San Marcos 8--In a surprisingly close match, John Chang of LJCD (20-2) swept three singles sets. San Marcos’ No. 3 doubles team of Chris Morgan and Wes Griffith swept their three sets.
BADMINTON
Pam Huynh of Mission Bay scored the only upset of the day, defeating No. 6 Monika McManus of Point Loma in the third round of the section individual tournament at the Federal Building in Balboa Park.
