Rent-a-cars, razors and CNN’s coverage of the Gulf War are among the American products and services that are the best in the world, according to a special issue of Fortune magazine devoted to competitiveness in the American marketplace. The magazine looked for superior, non-military goods that feature some combination of design excellence, superior manufacturing, top technology, reliability and value for price. Among the other products and services singled out: Judith Leiber handbags ranging in price from $750 to $6,000; Jockey briefs and Cross pen and pencil sets.
