Exxon Seeks to Limit Spill Liability: It filed suit in U.S. District Court in Anchorage, Alaska, to limit its liability and to consolidate and limit the number of private parties suing it for damages arising from the massive 1989 Alaskan oil spill. The company said it wants to avoid duplicate liability in 148 state actions involving 3,000 plaintiffs and 54 federal cases involving 2,300 plaintiffs. Last week, Exxon brought a similar suit to consolidate and limit suits by Alaska, the federal government and Native Alaskan villages.
