Armenian Fund Completes 25th Medical Supply Airlift

The Glendale-based United Armenian Fund has completed its 25th airlift of medical and emergency supplies to Armenia, bringing to $16 million the amount of aid it has delivered since its inception in November, 1989, officials announced this week.
The organization on June 8 dispatched to Yerevan, the Armenian capital, more than $750,000 worth of medicine, hospital supplies and equipment, milk, computers, construction materials and seismic tools for earthquake research, said Harut Sassounian, the fund’s executive director.
The airlift also carried a shipment of medical supplies and four baby incubators worth $102,000 for victims of an earthquake in late April in neighboring Georgia.
Georgian officials picked up the shipment in Yerevan, Sassounian said.
The United Armenian Fund is a coalition of six Armenian religious and relief organizations that joined forces after a devastating earthquake rocked Armenia on Dec. 7, 1988.
The fund collected supplies for its most recent shipment from Armenian and non-Armenian sources, including Medical Outreach for Armenians, the World Rehabilitation Fund and USC, Sassounian said.
