Santa Monica : Museum Seeks New Home

The environmental group Heal The Bay is looking for a new home for its museum and educational programs after losing the free space it has occupied in the Santa Monica Place shopping center.
The museum devoted to increasing public awareness of Santa Monica Bay and its marine environment will be closed this weekend and may not reopen unless other free space can be found somewhere on the Westside or in the South Bay area, executive director Adi Liberman said.
Liberman said he was told that the Rouse Co., which manages Santa Monica Place, intends to rent the museum’s present space for a new retail store. Negotiations to find an alternate location in the mall were unsuccessful.
About 55,000 schoolchildren and adults visited the museum’s exhibits on marine life and participated in its educational programs last year, Liberman said.
