Dr. Stephen J. Ryan, chairman of ophthalmology at the USC School of Medicine and director of the Doheny Eye Institute, will serve as interim dean of the medical school, the university announced Wednesday.
Ryan succeeds Dr. Robert Tranquada, who resigned effective June 30.
“Dr. Ryan is a superb clinician, researcher and teacher who has demonstrated superior ability as an academic administrator during his 17 years on the USC faculty,” USC President Steven B. Sample stated in a letter to faculty members.
Sample said that “in response to my urgent personal request,” Ryan accepted the post for a six-month period while the university conducts a nationwide search for the next permanent dean of the medical school.
