NATION IN BRIEF : FLORIDA : NASA Plans Shuttle Landings in Florida

NASA said it will consider Kennedy Space Center in Florida as a prime shuttle landing site starting with Atlantis’ satellite delivery mission next month. It is the first time since the 1986 Challenger disaster that Kennedy will have equal landing status with Edwards Air Force Base in California. The dry lake bed at Edwards provides considerable room for maneuvering, but new shuttle brakes make landings on Kennedy’s single runway more feasible. Of the National Aeronautics and Space Administration’s 41 shuttle flights, seven have ended at Kennedy.
