U.S. Unlikely to Agree to Antarctic Mining Ban

MADRID — The United States is unlikely to accept a compromise that would allow the 39 Antarctic Treaty nations to sign a historic agreement to ban mining on the frozen continent, a U.S. official said Thursday.
The environmental group Greenpeace accused the United States of deliberately threatening the Antarctic Treaty.
No one now mines the Antarctic, but geologists speculate it may contain deposits of strategic minerals.
