BASKETBALL
Ramona High guard Alfonso DeLaNuez, a Times All-County selection last year, will sign a letter of intent with San Jose State today. DeLaNuez, a 6-2 point guard, averaged 23.3 points and shot 44% from three-point range last year.
“I don’t think he’s anywhere near as good as he’s going to be,” Ramona Coach Al Schaffer said. “His best basketball is still ahead of him.”
San Jose State is coached by Stan Morrison, formerly of USC.
GOLF
Chris Riley, of Madison High, shot a 73 and is eight strokes behind leader Tiger Woods after two rounds of the Desert Junior tournament at Mission Hills Golf Course. Riley, the 1990 San Diego Section individual champion, is at 151 after shooting a 78 in the first round.
CYCLING
San Diego’s Roger Parenteu lowered his world record in the 3,000 meters during the qualifying rounds of the Atlas Hotels Masters World Cup at the Morley Field Cycling Velodrome. Parenteu’s time of 3:41.45 was 0.4 lower than his previous record. Qualifying rounds continue today with championship track events scheduled for Friday night.
