Chatsworth’s Hiring of Coach in Doubt
The installment of Sandy Greentree as boys’ basketball coach at Chatsworth High hit a snag late last week when Greentree learned that he probably would not be granted release time from his teaching position at Birmingham.
Greentree, 35, who led Marshall High to a City Section 3-A Division title in 1986 but has not coached the past five seasons, said his request to leave Birmingham in the afternoons to coach at Chatsworth has been denied by the Los Angeles Unified School District.
Though Greentree agreed to continue coaching Chatsworth in summer-league play, he was not optimistic that he will be granted the afternoon release time--initially believed to be a formality.
“The chances of the details being worked out are not high,” Greentree said.
Said Donna Wyatt, an assistant principal at Chatsworth: “Right now, nothing is definite.”
