Safely Kept Wins Sprint Crown

BALTIMORE — Safely Kept, who has never been beaten by another female at a distance of less than a mile, went to the front early and beat In the Curl by a half-length in winning the Maryland Million Distaff Handicap on Sunday for the third consecutive year.
The Maryland Million is an annual 11-race card for Maryland-breds at Pimlico Race Course.
Safely Kept was timed in 1:11 for the six furlongs and paid $2.60, $2.20 and $2.10. In the Curl paid $2.40 and $2.10 and Wood So returned $2.10. There was a minus show pool of more than $9,000.
Timely Warning ran away from pacesetting favorite Baron De Vaux in the stretch to win the $200,000 Maryland Classic, a race the 6-year-old gelding also won last year. Countus In won the Maryland Ladies for the third consecutive year.
Smart Alec won the $100,000 Sprint Handicap. Missy White Oak won the Maryland Lassie and the 2-year-old filly returned $89, $28 and $14.60.
