Michael Andretti won the provisional pole for Sunday’s 200-mile Indy car race at the Mid-Ohio Sports Car Course at Lexington, Ohio.
Andretti, who trails CART Indy-car series leader Bobby Rahal by three points, will earn another point today if he can hang on to his lead in qualifying on the 2 1/4-mile, 15-turn road circuit.
Andretti, the defending race winner, set the track qualifying record of 115.652 m.p.h. a year ago.
