Merlene Ottey came close to matching Florence Griffith Joyner’s 200-meter record at the Van Damme Memorial track meet at Brussels, running the third-fastest time ever.
Ottey was timed in 21.64, shy of the retired Griffith Joyner’s record by 0.30 seconds.
Kenyan John Ngugi ran the third-fastest time ever in the 10,000 meters. His winning time of 27 minutes 11.62 seconds was 3.39 seconds off the 1989 world record of Arturo Barrios of Mexico.
The 200-meter world champion, American Michael Johnson, finished the event in 19.89, 0.17 seconds off the record of Italian Pietro Mennea.
