Koch Wins First Regatta; Conner Places Third
- Share via
Bill Koch, one of two defense skippers in next year’s America’s Cup races, won the first regatta of the 1991 Maxi World Championships at Porto Cervo, Italy.
Dennis Conner, the other America’s Cup defense hopeful, finished third aboard a yacht skippered by John Kostecki.
Koch’s yacht Matador-2, the heaviest Maxi in the fleet at 50 tons, dominated the seven-race series, winning six and finishing third in the other. Conner’s team won the third race, but finished no better than third in any of the others.
The second and final regatta of the Maxi World Championships will be held at St. Tropez, France. Because one race can be thrown out in the overall scoring, Koch will enter that regatta with a perfect record.
