California IN BRIEF : EL CENTRO : Ground Broken for 2nd Prison in Imperial County

Ground was broken 12 miles west of El Centro for the second state prison to be located in Imperial County. The facility was designed to house 2,000 medium-custody inmates in cells and 208 minimum-custody inmates in dormitories. The Imperial (South) prison is expected to begin housing inmates in April, 1993, and will cost $224.4 million to build, officials said.
