The Los Angeles Unified School District grew by 14,500 students this year, with almost 639,500 youngsters reporting to classes in kindergarten through 12th grades at the system’s 600 schools.
Despite the semester’s early start--with school beginning in August under the district’s new year-round schedule--enrollment growth matched projections by district officials. In the first five weeks of school, elementary schools registered 2.3% more students than last year, with junior and senior highs growing by 2.1%.
