Airlines Smarting From Discounts: United Airlines scored a strong 11.8% increase in traffic but warned of more trouble ahead for the battered industry. Unless the economy surges or fare cutting eases, “financial results for the industry will continue to be quite disappointing,” the Chicago-based airline said. One airline analyst said United, American and Delta had decent traffic results last month “but the key thing is yield and everyone’s been pretty cautious on yield.” Yield is managed closely by airlines trying to squeeze out every tenth of a cent per mile per passenger that they can. Low fares depress yields--and the fares are abundantly available.
