Los Alamitos Hangs On When Conversion Attempt Fails

BELLFLOWER — A big defensive hit by junior defensive back Jake Beeney, and a 90-yard kickoff return by Raoul Morris to start the second half proved to be the difference for Los Alamitos Friday night as the unbeaten Griffins held on for a 14-12 victory over St. John Bosco.

The Braves cut the Griffin lead to 14-12 late in the fourth quarter when Derek Ayers scored on a one-yard run. The Braves elected to go for a two-point conversion that would have tied the game.

Beeney made a big hit on quarterback Jason Hamilton, stopping him at the one-yard line. After the Braves’ on-side kick attempt failed, the Griffins (4-0) ran the clock down to eight seconds before turning the ball over to St. John Bosco (1-3) for the game’s final play--an incomplete pass.

Derek Ayers scored on a 12-yard pass from Hamilton in the first quarter to put St. John Bosco ahead, 6-0. Los Alamitos (4-0) tied the game in the second quarter when Paul Kaplan caught a 10-yard pass from Tim Carey, and led 7-6 after the conversion. Morris took the second half kickoff at his own 10 and went untouched down the left side of the field to score the winning touchdown.
