Brazil Police Investigate Cocaine-Tainted Candy

SAO PAULO, Brazil — Fruit-flavored candy injected with cocaine and sold outside high schools in three Brazilian states has sickened some students, but a police investigation has failed to turn up any suspects.

The first contaminated candies were found in Rio de Janeiro last week, narcotics police said Friday. Many of the tainted sweets were bought by students in front of high schools in the states of Sao Paulo, Minas Gerais and Bahia.

The amount of cocaine was too small to cause addiction, police said. The few children who have eaten the tainted candy have felt nausea and rapid heartbeat, but all have recovered quickly.
