Van Nuys Montclair Prep 45, Covina Western Christian 7--Montclair Prep running back Eliel Swinton rushed for 356 yards in 17 carries and scored six touchdowns in a Southern Section Alpha League opener at Covina Charter Oak High.
Western Christian (0-1, 2-4) did not make a tackle until late in the second quarter.
By that time, Swinton had rushed for 203 yards and three touchdowns in only four carries.
Montclair Prep, ineligible for postseason competition, improved to 1-0 and 4-1.
Montebello Cantwell 32, Cathedral 25--Fred Navarro rushed for 170 yards in 33 carries and scored two touchdowns to lead Cantwell (2-3-1) in a Santa Fe League opener at Cathedral.
Cantwell quarterback Jimmy Cortinas scored on a one-yard sneak with 1:55 remaining, to culminate a 17-play, 71-yard drive that consumed more than 10 minutes, to preserve the victory.
Gerald Valdivia caught a 29-yard pass from Art Moreno to bring Cathedral (5-1) to within 26-25 on the final play of the third quarter.
